Leesburg's Fielder Signs With Bluefield College, March 6, 2002

LEESBURG -- Leesburg Coach Jason Gray hopes goalkeeper Greg Fielder becomes a trendsetter for the Yellow Jackets' boys soccer program.

Fielder, 18, became the first player to sign with a college since Gray became Leesburg's coach four years ago. Fielder signed Monday with Bluefield College, an NAIA Division II school in Virginia with about 1,000 students.

Though there have been other Leesburg players who have played college soccer, they made their teams as walk-ons.

"This is really big for our program,'' Gray said. "This is the first time we have had anybody sign with a college.''

Fielder, who was named to the Lake Sentinel's all-county first-team this season, emerged as one of the steadiest keepers in the area, despite a 2.42 goals-allowed average, which was primarily the result of an inexperienced defense. He entered this season with a 0.80 goal-allowed average.

Fielder, who is 6-foot-3, used his size and range to his advantage in the goal.

It was Fielder who Gray put in charge of directing the defense on the field.

"He has always been there for me,'' Gray said. "We were really young back there [in defense] but he really took charge back there.''

Bluefield Coach Jeremy Schwartz, who is entering his second season with the Rams, drove to Leesburg to meet with Gray about Fielder and left with a couple of game tapes to study. He invited Fielder up for a visit and Fielder liked what he saw.

He got to meet the players, played in an indoor tournament with some of the team, and visited with Schwarz.

"I'm very happy for him,'' said Karen Fielder, Greg's mother. "He is a very hard, dedicated worker and more than anything else, I am glad to see him further his education.''

Finding a keeper was one of the major needs for the Rams, who are losing their only other keeper, Greg Andrews, to graduation.

"They told me it [the starting spot] is going to be mine to lose,'' Fielder said. "It is going to be exciting to play. I liked everything up there. It's a nice place.''

Leesburg's Custer Ties Scoring Mark In Victory, January 26, 2001

Leesburg Memorial Field at Hubert O. Dabney Stadium, Home of the Jackets
January 26, 2001|By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff

LEESBURG -- After 10 years of standing alone as Leesburg High School's career goal-scoring leader, Benji Edwards now has company.

On a night dedicated to seniors, in Leesburg's final regular season game Thursday night at Memorial Field/H.O. Dabney Stadium, Jason Custer scored three goals in the first half to give him 45 for his career and lead Leesburg to a 9-0 victory over Eustis.

The three goals not only ties him with Edwards, it also gives Custer 21 for the season, moving him into third place in the school's record books for goals in a season. The only two players ahead of Custer are Jeff Moffett (1989-90) with 26 and Jerry Ricketson (1987-88) with 22.

"It's a great feeling to be here for three years and to do it,'' Custer said about the career record. "I knew it was possible [to get the record] coming in here, but it was Senior Night and I knew we were going to try to get everyone into the game.''

Former Leesburg Coach Larry Butler, who coached Edwards and now works as an assistant coach in the school's program, said it is difficult to compare Edwards and Custer.

"They are two different styles of player,'' Butler said. "Benji was probably quicker, but Benji also played up front most of his career where Custer came out of the midfield. Custer probably has more assists than Benji had.''

After Custer got his three goals, and especially late in the game with time running out, it became apparent that his Leesburg teammates were making an effort to give Custer as many goal-scoring opportunities as possible.

Custer almost broke the record late in the first half when a shot by him beat Casey Compton but hit off the cross bar. Custer had another shot in the 19th minute that was saved by Compton, who was pounded by 26 shots from Leesburg in the half.

"Normally, we don't try to run up the score,'' Leesburg Coach Jason Gray said about Custer playing the entire game despite the score, "but they were trying to get the ball forward to Jason to get the record.

"Jason is a great kid, he is a great leader. He is dedicated and he works hard.''

Leesburg (10-15-2) will enter district play next week at Booster Stadium in Ocala, giving Custer at least one more game to get the record. But getting the record isn't what is most important to Custer.

"It is more important for us to win the game than for me to get the record,'' Custer said.

Eustis (4-13-2) had few scoring opportunities. In fact, Leesburg keepers Ryan Dahart and Greg Fielder, who played keeper in the second half, only had to make two saves all game.

Custer got Leesburg's scoring started in the seventh minute when he stole a pass about 50 yards out, dribbled down the field in a one-on-one with Compton, forcing Compton to commit before Custer hit a right-footed shot off the left post and into the goal.

Eight minutes later, Custer deflected a corner kick taken by Stephen Malinda into the goal and then scored his third goal in the 35th minute when he made a run down the middle of the field, right past a Eustis defender, before softly hitting a shot into the goal.

And Custer led what truly turned out to be a night for the seniors to celebrate.

Senior fullback Brian Arleth got his first goal of the season, senior midfielder Brett Colson had a goal and an assist, senior midfielder George Singeltary got his second goal of the season, senior midfielder Jamie Battle scored a goal and even senior keeper Dahart, who played on the field in the second half, scored a goal on a header.

Malinda, a freshman, had a goal and two assists, and sophomore forward Danny Delgado had an assist.

Malinda Excels For Leesburg, January 8, 2004

The Midfielder Is The School's All-time Leading Goal Scorer With 77, Including 12 This Season.

January 8, 2004|By Joe Williams, Sentinel Staff Writer

LEESBURG -- Despite playing most of his career as a midfielder, Stephen Malinda has accomplished quite a bit around the goal for Leesburg's soccer team.

Malinda, 18, earlier this season became Leesburg's all-time scoring leader and currently has 77 goals. He also has equaled Leesburg's single-season goal-scoring record, getting 27 goals in both his sophomore and junior seasons.

Last year, Malinda may have shown his value to Leesburg's team when forward Danny Delgado went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in a knee during the team's second practice of the season. Malinda moved from midfield to forward and Leesburg's goal-scoring threat hardly skipped a beat.

Now, Malinda is back at his more comfortable midfield position, though he sometimes will move to forward. He has 12 goals and 14 assists for the season.

"God gave him the gift in his left foot, and there are plenty of colleges out there looking for a left midfielder,'' Leesburg Coach Jason Gray said about Malinda's possibility of playing beyond high school. "He is playing midfield, but we are actually moving him around a little bit. If we are playing a team with a weak right back, we will put his left foot up there.''

But give Malinda his choice and he will play midfield.

"I definitely feel a lot more comfortable at midfield,'' Malinda said. "Forward is a good position because you get a chance to score a lot of goals, but you are not in the game that much. In the midfield, you control the center part of the game. It doesn't matter where I am playing as long as we are winning.''

And Leesburg has been winning with a 9-5-2 record.

Malinda's big left foot has also come into play on the football field, where he has scored 99 points. He kicked 47-yard field goals twice in his career and kicked a 55-yard field goal in practice.

In baseball, Malinda is right-handed. An unusual combination of being a left-footed/right-handed athlete, Malinda plays shortstop on Leesburg's baseball team.

"I write right-handed and I throw right-handed,'' Malinda said. "I am the only person I know who is left-footed and right-handed.''

Gray said Malinda came to him as a smart soccer player and goal scorer.

"He is just level-headed,'' Gray said. "Somebody taught him at an early age how to pick his shots. Somebody also taught him not just to kick the ball really hard into the net. He has been taught on how to position the ball and finish.''

Gray said it is obvious that Malinda would rather play in the midfield area.

"He is a lot better facing people. He likes to see everything,'' Gray said.

"I can see him playing at the next level as the left-side mid. He loves facing the goal, being in front of it. For him, to be facing the goal, playing forward, we have to depend on the long ball or the through ball [to get it to Malinda] and that is not always there with good high-school teams.''
